Ceara State took the lead when it abolished slavery in 1884 and for this reason is sometimes known as the ‘abolition land’.

The State of Ceara represents the third largest economy in Brazil’s North East and it’s capital, Fortaleza, has a modern architectural profile and also  represents an important tourism centre.

After centuries of an essentially agricultural economy, the state has experienced an industrial development boom. Clothing production in Ceará is the second largest in Brazil in terms of volume and export. The manufacture of shoes, furniture, food and mining, as well editorial and printing are all established here.

The State of Ceara is also one of the largest cultural centres in Brazil, marked by popular religious beliefs and intellectuals in the national literature and art segments. It’s the birthplace of writers, such as José de Alencar, one of the greatest novelists of Brazilian literature “Indianism”; and Rachel de Queiroz, one of the most significant writers of regionalist novels.

With sunshine and hot weather all the year, and mild temperature at night, the State of Ceara has a diversified ecosystem made up of areas that include caatinga, Atlantic Forest, savannah and marshland. Following the industrial development, tourism is the segment that has shown the highest rates of development here in the last few decades.

The City of Fortaleza receives an average of 500 thousand tourists every year, who are really attracted by the dazzling 576 km coastline, comprising of 87 beaches, large sand dunes and much more including several attractions spread across the state, with emphasis on the National Park of Ubajara, where you will be able to explore caves and waterfalls which is perfect for the trekkers amongst us!
