Overview
Constructed entirely by hand using natural materials and creative design, the house stands sentinel over protected forest and sweeping views. The area is registered as an Area Protegido Ambiental (APA), which gives legal protection to the environment as well as being declared a Refugio Silvestre by the IEF (wildlife sanctuary).
Many tourists visit the historic town of Tiradentes (5 km), which nestles in the valley and horse ride, bike or walk the trails of the Serra. It is part of the Estrada Real, which was used for carrying gold to the coast from this once mined area. The village of Bichinho, a thriving artisan centre, is 8km away. The local people are mainly cattle farmers producing milk as well as having abundant craft, building and land-working skills.
The farm house and its land have been developed on Permaculture lines, towards self-sufficiency and funding. To this end about 10 of the 42 hectares have been used for sustainability. There is an organic garden with compost bins and watering system, a bio-digestor and water filters serve the house, where water is derived from a natural spring higher in the mountain. There is a second spring that brings water to the stables and chicken house. The rest is forest and more than 2,000 trees have been planted in an area of re-forestation.
A smaller house built in the style of Ben Law´s Woodland home and serves as a guesthouse. It is entirely self-contained with a bathroom and open plan kitchen, dining, sitting area with a ‘fogão a lenha’ (wood-burning cooker) at its heart. A mezzanine acts as a double bedroom, although as many as 12 people have slept in the house!
The main farm house is curved to reflect the mountains. One ‘wing’ contains a master bedroom with en suite and a music room and in the second ‘wing’ there are 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. The round centre has a kitchen, galleried library, dining and sitting space. Building techniques include rammed-earth, adobe, pau-pique, 2 grass roofs, a thatched roof and careful selection of demolition and eucalyptus wood. Solar panels provide hot water.
Someone once commented on the house and the surroundings, “Here is where you meet God!”
